Pole Academy Philippines Official Statement January 24, 2014 We have a very rich and diverse dance heritage in the Philippines. Pole Academy Philippines and the rest of the country’s dance community recognize Ed Aniel as the pioneer of pole through his creative work for the dance, which began in 2004. (Ed Aniels Profile here) https://facebook/photo.php?fbid=10151298114604603&set=a.10151298113789603.519050.164044089602&type=3&theater Since then, the genre has progressed into a legitimate dance form and a sound fitness activity. Proof of its appreciation is made evident by a proliferation of pole performance dance groups and a growing community. In 2012, the group, Pole Dance Philippines was formed. According to its administrators, the aim of this group is to connect the pole community in the country. Among its members are Pole Academy Philippines teachers and students and other pole dance groups, some of whom its leaders were Ed’s former students. The group administrator invited Pole Academy Philippines’ founder, Ed Aniel, to join this community. This year marks Ed’s tenth as a pole dancer, choreographer, designer and self-styled revolutionary. To talk about his work, as with several articles in the past, an interview was conducted and published by The United Pole Artist community. On January 16, 2014, the article was published online and shared on the group page. (Article here: unitedpoleartists.blogspot/2014/01/upa-interviews-ed-aniel-of-pole-dance.html) The piece spoke about his life and journey and like many other articles over the years, recognized Ed as the pioneer of pole in the Philippines. We value legacy and heritage and being a pioneer is something that will always be acknowledged, celebrated and cannot be taken away. It is unfortunate that an off-putting Facebook thread was published online not long after. In this regard, Pole Academy Philippines would like to make the following statement. To those who have participated in this thread either by posting it, commenting or liking it, you represent this community and have a responsibility to it as members and leaders and yet are the first to lambast the industry’s pioneer, an artist, a mentor and friend to many on a public forum such as Facebook. We are disappointed in the pretense behind the administrators of Pole Dance Philippines of claiming to have standards or beliefs in bringing this community together veiled by posts that promote co-existence in peace when personal behaviors do not conform. We are saddened by the fact that respect cannot be given to Ed as the Philippine Pole Pioneer by the very industry he devoted ten years to. We are offended by the false accusations, harsh criticism, malicious, unkind and unfair comments made in this thread by those who have never encountered Ed on a personal and professional capacity. We are angered by the lies and misrepresentation made on Ed Aniel by certain individuals in this group who have influenced people such as those in this thread to make bigoted, prejudiced, intolerant and libelous statements. Ed Aniel and Pole Academy Philippines will remain creative and pioneering and true to our vision, syllabus and aesthetic style and will continue to share our knowledge and art unselfishly with those who believe in it.
