Police Federation of England and Wales joins widows pensions campaign The Police Federation of England and Wales is urging people to sign a petition which is campaigning for police widows to keep their pensions for life - regardless of whether their relationship status changes. Police Federation Legislation Sub-Committee Chairman Adele Kirkwood said: “We are calling on the Government to honour its commitment to the widows and widowers of police officers who die while in the...force. “These men and women have paid the ultimate price to keep their communities safe and are often the main breadwinners of the families they leave behind. “Depriving widows of their pensions if they then go on to have another relationship seems like a double punishment and assumes that new partners are in a position to financially support widows and their children. This ultimately denies them money that is rightfully theirs, exposing them to financial hardship and is grossly unfair.” You can sign the petition here https://change.org/p/theresa-may-mp-grant-police-widows… At the time of writing just under 70,000 people had signed the petition which calls on Home Secretary Theresa May to allow widows of police officers who die in service to keep their spouse’s pension if they remarry or cohabit. The campaign – which has the support of Care of Police Survivors – follows on from a decision in Northern Ireland to reinstate pensions for widows and widowers whose spouses died in service from 1 January 1989. Under the RUC Pension Regulations 1988 these survivors will now have their widows’ pension reinstated from 1 July 2014. The petition was started by police widow Kate Hall – whose West Midlands Police officer husband Colin died from a heart attack at the scene of an incident in 1987.
