Police are hunting a man responsible for a campaign of criminal damage that is plaguing a community in Tameside. Residents of Gibraltar Lane, Haughton Green and the surrounding streets have been repeatedly targeted by a man who has caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to cars in 26 separate incidents since the beginning of August. Since 1st August 2014, when an unknown offender attacked a car on Gibraltar Lane with a screwdriver or similar tool in the early hours of the morning, the residents of this street and nearby Freshwater Drive and Newport Road have been waking to find their cars repeatedly damaged. Some residents have even repaired their cars and then been targeted again in the space of just a few weeks. Officers have now released CCTV footage of the offender, in the hope that someone will recognise the man responsible and contact Police. He is described as white, 20-35yrs, slim build, 5ft 8” tall and wearing a grey hooded top pulled up to cover his face. He is thought to live locally. PC Sajid Pervaiz said: “These attacks are persistent, pervasive and hugely damaging to the community spirit. “It is understandably frustrating for residents, who are being targeted again and again by this thug who has complete disregard for people’s property. “His actions can only be described as shocking and disgraceful, using a sharp implement to gouge deep scratches and cuts into paint and bodywork on cars all along the street. “He has caused almost £10,000 of damage to people’s cars in a six-week period, for no other reason than because he can. “I want to assure the residents that we are doing everything we can to put a stop to this reprehensible human being’s actions and bring him to justice.” Anyone with information is asked to call Police on 101 or independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
