Police are urging drivers and pedestrians to take care in tonight’s severe weather conditions. Flooding in a number of areas across Northern Ireland, including parts of South and East Belfast, Newry and Moira, has caused a number of manhole covers to become dislodged which could be a danger to public safety. Chief Inspector Pat Foy advised: “We would advise people to keep themselves safe from potential harm by not walking or driving in areas of floodwater which can be contaminated with sewage and other hidden hazards such as exposed manholes. It is hard to know how deep the waters are and the potential dangers that could be hidden below the surface.” The Met Office has warned of heavy rain moving northwards across all parts later tonight with strong to gale force South Easterly winds returning. Chief Inspector Foy added: “Our advice to motorists is to remain aware of road conditions and take extra care when driving - reduce your speed, keep a safe distance, allow extra braking time and use headlights.” Updated information on road closures as a result of flooding can be accessed via trafficwatchni. Those affected by flooding can call the Flood helpline 0300 2000 100.
