Police commissioner vows to tackle crime in Delta The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Mr. Alkali Usman, has promised to drastically reduce the wave of crime in the state. Usman made the promise in Asaba, while briefing the press on the operations of the Delta State Command of the Nigeria Police Force on Wednesday. “Our dogged resolve in this direction has been paying off as reflected in the successes we recorded in the month under review,” the commissioner said On Wednesday in Asaba as he reeled out a list of operations of the command that paid off in October. Noting that kidnapping and armed robbery dominated the crimes perpetrated during the period, Usman said there was no single case of rape reported during the period. He said in one of the kidnap cases, the DPO Isiokolo Division, Mrs. Iwok Ndifereke, received a distress call that one Abemu Gabriel of Oviere community, a teacher attached to Oruodo Primary School in Ethiope East Local Government Area, was kidnapped by gunmen by the rail line at Okpara. “Sequel to that, the DPO mobilised his men and blocked all exit routes into the area and went after the hoodlums with his patrol team. The patrol team caught up with the hoodlums at Utiuyo village in Okpara and the criminals, on sighting the policemen, opened fire on them. “In the ensuing gun battle, one of the hoodlums was fatally wounded, while the rest suspects escaped with bullet wounds. The victim was rescued unhurt,” he said.
