Police have arrested and charged a Whyalla truck driver involved in a double fatality near Cowell on Saturday, January 24. At about 9.10am, a rigid truck and car collided on the Lincoln Highway, approximately 10 kilometres north of Cowell. The two occupants of the car died at the scene. Major Crash Investigators examined the scene and will allege the truck driver drove onto the wrong side of the road, colliding head-on with the car. Police are also investigating the possibility of driver fatigue as being a significant factor in the crash. The truck driver, a 51-year-old man from Whyalla, has cooperated with police and assisted with the investigation. He was charged the morning of Sunday, January 25 with aggravated driving without due care and later released on police bail. He is expected to appear in Whyalla Magistrates Court on March 30.
