Police have charged a man following the armed robbery of a bank in Marrickville earlier in the week. About 2.50pm on Wednesday (30 April 2014), police were called to a shopping centre on Victoria Road, Marrickville, following reports of a bank robbery. It’s alleged a 56-year-old man threatened a female teller with a knife, demanding cash. After the teller complied with the man’s demands, he was last seen running up escalators and towards the car park. No one was physically injured during the incident however the female teller suffered shock and was treated at the scene by Ambulance Paramedics. Police from Marrickville Local Area Command attended and commenced inquiries into the robbery. Just before 10.30am today (Friday 2 May 2014), a 56-year-old man was arrested on King Street, Newtown and taken to Newtown Police Station. Officers then executed a search warrant at a home in Redfern where it’s alleged they seized items related to the robbery. The man was charged with robbery armed with an offensive weapon and refused bail, to appear before Central Local Court on Monday 13 May 2014.
