Police have used tear gas and water cannon to disperse angry anti-austerity protesters in Italy. The demonstrators were protesting in their thousands outside the European Central Bank’s monthly policy meeting in the city of Naples. They blame what they call misery, unemployment and poverty on the ECB. Street protests have repeatedly rocked eurozone countries hardest hit by sovereign debt and economic crisis. The so-called troika of the International Monetary Fund, EU and the ECB has demanded stricken economies implement tough structural reforms and painful budget cuts to tackle their crises.
