Police have worked with Erewash Borough Council to suspend two premises licences following reports of disorder. At a hearing on Wednesday, July 31, the council’s Licensing Sub-Committee approved two applications made by Derbyshire police to suspend the licences at Kirk Hallam Social Club, in Dallimore Road, Kirk Hallam, and Buzz Bar, in High Street, Long Eaton. The applications were made following an assault at the social club on July 27, in which a 22-year-old man was struck on the head with a pool cue and an incident of disorder at Buzz Bar on July 24th in which a 39-year-old suffered a broken ankle. The police used powers introduced by parliament in 2007 to request that the council immediately suspend the licences due to “serious disorder.” The suspensions will continue until a further hearing is held where they will be reviewed. At that hearing, the Licensing Sub-Committee may make permanent changes to the licence or may revoke it. Licensing officer PC Mark Dunn said: “In circumstances where serious disorder has occurred on licensed premises, the team will always seek to ensure that such disorder cannot re-occur. It is critical to examine why the disorder happened and how it can be prevented in the future. In some cases, an instance of disorder seeks to highlight poor management practices or some other deep-rooted problems. “We will not tolerate those cases where the poor management of premises leads crime and disorder.”
