Police in Sunderland are carrying out extra patrols to tackle shop thieves. It follows an increase in offences in Houghton town centre and surrounding areas such as the larger supermarkets in Hetton and Shiney Row. Local officers are targeting those suspected of being involved in thefts in the area and are working with retailers to identify potential thieves and take appropriate action. Earlier this month, a 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft after reports that goods suspected of being stolen from shops were being sold to members of the public in Houghton town centre. He has been bailed pending further enquiries. The activity is part of Northumbria Polices Operation Soundwave, aimed at cracking down on opportunist thieves and burglars across the force.
