Police remove banner referring to graft scandal from MHP party building Police have removed a massive banner that makes reference to the Dec. 17 and Dec. 25 corruption and bribery scandals from an İstanbul building of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) on Wednesday. The banner hung on the front side of the MHP Zeytinburnu office and cites a 1994 quote from current President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Robbery runs in the family, with sons taking after fathers, not fathers taking after sons. After placing it on the building, the MHP members threw counterfeit $1 banknotes onto the street from the windows of the office. Several people grabbed the dollars thinking them to be genuine, but left them on the street after realizing they were fake. The party members, addressing the public from the windows, chanted the slogan Our battle is against the corrupt order. Police arrived in the neighborhood and asked the MHP members to remove the banner, but they refused. A fire brigade and riot police were dispatched to the building and after a nearly five-hour standoff, two police officers climbed a ladder on the fire truck to remove the banner. During the standoff, a group of MHP members inside the building sang the Turkish national anthem and played a past speech of Erdoğan. The same group shouted Thief! Beware! as the police officers took down the banner. The police then put the banner inside a police car and drove off.
