In some cases, they are trying to label the victims as the leaders of war crimes scandal- hit Bangladesh Jamaat-e- Islami, whose top leaders are now detained and facing war crimes for their heinous crimes charger during the Liberation War in 1971. And most surprisingly, sometimes, they utilise opposition-backed hartal to harass the innocent people, even in some cases, they dub the grassroots ruling party leaders as Jamaat-Shibir men to hide their unlawful extortion allegations. On Wednesday morning during of the countrywide hartal enforced by opposition Jamaat , a group of police led by two sub-inspectors in broad daylight allegedly shot a fruit trader and indiscriminately charged batons on his teen age son at Amtola area of Shahajanpur area in the capital when he refused to give them extortion. According to the local sources, Sub-Inspectors Sadek and Mohsin demanded money from Moksed Ali when he was loading fruits from a truck at around 11: 30 AM. But Moksed refused to give them any money saying that due to the continuous hartal enforced by Jamaat-Shibir, he was facing huge loss. Being refused, angry police men tried to forcibly pick him up on the vehicle. When my son Rakibul Islam tried to resist police from arresting me without any allegations, police first started charging baton on my son, Moksed said when he was taking to the reporters at Dhaka Medical College Hospital under police custody. Seeing the barbaric police torture, local people came to the spot and requested the police team not to illegally arrest Moksud or Rakibul and to stop assaults on Rakibul. But sensing ‘troubles’, police opened fire on Muksed, an eyewitness said on condition of anonymity. Later police took them up on police van and brought both Moksed and his son to Dhaka DMCH in critical condition. According to local people, Moksed has his own business named Sarder Trading Corporation at Khilgaon Bazar in the city and he is a grassroots leader of the ruling Awami League. However, Shajahanpur Thana AL president Gulam Ashraf Talukder could not be reached despite several attempts by The Independent. Talking to the reporters at DMCH SI Sadek of the Shajahanpur Police Station said,‘‘ During patrol, police arrested one people and there were around 40 to 50 people were standing near the police vehicles.”During altercation between police and them, police was forced to open fire and Muksed got bullet injuries, he claimed. Another SI Mohsin of the Shajahanpur Police Station, who was also present on the spot during the firing, claimed that following alternation, police opened fire. I cannot say anything more, he said About the incident, Inspector Md Anisuzzaman Khan, Officer-in-Charge of the police Station said, ‘‘It’s not our Thana Police, but reserve police first detained one man during hartal hours from the spot and when the mob tried to hijack the man from police custody, police opened fire to disperses them thinking them as Jamaat-Shibir activists.” Thus Muksud got bullet injuries, he claimed About the police attempt to label the innocent trader as Jamaat-Shibir activist to divert the allegation of extortion by local police, he said, ‘‘No, there is no truth in this allegation and if you have anything more, you can write whatever you want.” While talking to The Independent, Deputy Police Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police( Ramna Zone) Md Ashrafuzzaman also admitted that though police fired on them suspecting them as Jamaat-Shibir activists, actually they were not Jamaat-Shibir. ‘‘But as they attacked police vehicles, police opened fire. And Moksud would be sued in this connection,’’ he said. About the allegation of extortion he said,‘‘ The allegation is completely false.”
