Police urge racegoers to plan their trip for the Bathurst 1000 Tuesday, 07 October 2014 04:44:15 AM Police are urging racegoers to plan their trip ahead of time as they make the annual pilgrimage to Mount Panorama for the Bathurst 1000 this week. A high-visibility policing operation will be in place in and around Bathurst, for the V8 Supercars ultimate endurance race, Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, from Thursday 9 to Sunday 12 October 2014. General duties officers from Chifley Local Area Command and across Western Region, will be assisted by specialist police to focus on road safety and anti-social and criminal behaviour. Western Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Geoff McKechnie, urged racegoers to be extremely vigilant with their speed, fatigue and driving behaviour. “We are expecting more than 200,000 visitors to the Bathurst area this weekend and, with a significant increase in traffic, we are urging motorists to keep safety at top of mind,” Assistant Commissioner McKechnie said. “In recent years, we have seen a great improvement in crowd behaviour at the Bathurst 1000, however, we are still seeing some motorists breaking the law and putting innocent road users at risk. “During the 2013 police operation, nine people were charged with drink-driving and more than 495 were issued traffic infringement notices, with more than half of those for speed-related offences. “I urge racegoers to plan their trip and allow plenty of travel time, considering changes to traffic conditions, road closures and heavy traffic on the Great Western Highway and Bells Line of Road. “There will be additional highway patrol cars out and about to make sure the racing is left to the professionals on the mountain,” Assistant Commissioner McKechnie said. For all special event traffic information, including road closures, special event clearways and live traffic reports, visit: livetraffic. “Our other focus of the weekend is creating a safe, family-friendly atmosphere on the mountain, while minimising the impact of the event of the people of Bathurst,” Assistant Commissioner McKechnie said. “We have been working closely with V8 Supercars, Bathurst Regional Council, private security, and other agencies, to make sure the 2014 event is enjoyable for families and car enthusiasts alike. “We will be maintaining a highly-visible presence in the local area and anyone caught causing trouble or breaking the law will be dealt with swiftly,” Assistant Commissioner McKechnie said.
