Police will stop protest march, Bawa says Source: The National, Monday November 18th, 2013 By SHIRLYN BELDEN POLICE will ban any protest march or public meeting today “in the interest of public safety”. National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Andy Bawa (pictured) has warned that police would arrest any groups or individuals holding any public forum or protest march today. Bawa said in a statement last Friday this was because to maintain “public safety, peace and good order”. “Any one mobilising to stage a public protest will be apprehended and charged,” he said. “There will be no public protest march or strike on Monday, Nov 18. “Members of the public found congregating in public places on Monday Nov, 18 will be arrested and charged by police with loitering and unlawful assembly”. “The police are urging members of the public to cooperate and ensure that peace, security and safety are maintained in the city.” NCD-Central police commander Jim Andrews said police would enforce the law on loitering and unlawful public assembly. “Police in NCD will remain on alert because past experiences have shown that opportunists took advantage of such situations to cause violence, disrupt services, destroy public properties and loot,” Andrews said. “While I cannot comment on the merits of the issues that the marches or demonstrations will be against, the fact remains that peace and security of the public is our number one priority. “At this point in time we cannot guarantee the safety of members of the public so will not be approving a public demonstration to take place.” The People’s Power Movement led by activist Noel Anjo had planned to hold a protest march in the city today. But this was rejected by police. A notice was then released by the group urging government and business houses plus schools and members of the public to take part in a stop-work protest today. It also urged foreign-owned business houses to close their businesses.
