Political Improv “The Tanning of America” an article by Donna White-Davis copyright 2013 June 2013 Once again the issue of complexion and politics has reared its head. The news is spouting the statistics of the populations divisions changing before 2050. First they mention race. Race is not a scientific construct. In science it does not exist. The complexion variations are a phenotype a definition of a physical characteristic within a species. So all we are considering is a phenotype, nothing really to get upset about. So let’s begin by letting go of the last three hundred years of ignorance and consider jus the attempts in the last two hundred years in order to avoid additional senseless violence. Apparently statistics show that human beings of light complexions will decrease in America to fewer than 50 percent therefore people of light complexions will no longer be a “majority” in America and they have been a “minority” in the world population all of our lives. Fact. With the population changes in America humans of light complexions have entered the realm of “endangered” as a phenotype of the human species. There for they deserve special protection in order for the phenotype to survive. Have ever considered that? Within the last two centuries scientist , and social reformers, and government entities as well and human rights entities have tried to smooth out the difficulties between complexions by encouraging one or the other mating practices. Some have endeavored to lighten the population and even stated that human beings could become lighter by allowing three generations of planned breeding. That is interesting since it became a huge effort after the Civil War to not only lighten the population but share the genetic intelligence and talent variable more equitably among the complexion phenotype. It has worked. Now we have books written about “the Tanning of America” by Steve Stoute. He, and believe me many sociologists of the twentieth Century, saw the tanning as the answer for complexion conflict. Obviously it is not. What is, is the open and honest consideration of all the continuum of complexion differences in humanity, the recognitions that some varieties are endangered and thus have to be protected and the realization that the tanning of America that has taken place in the last three generations could be changed to lightening or darkening in the next three generations. Human beings are biological species and the sooner we admit to that and understand the implications of that, the sooner the violence in America around that issue will end. So do not fear when the statistics are spouted. Just realize that we have to plan for the preservation of the endangered phenotypes of our species as well as stop the artificial differentiations that cause the violence. That should be happening world wide –not merely in America. We have to not only begin to see the differences but appreciate the beauty in the variety while guaranteeing the existence of all of the phenotypes. Imagining a world of “Tan People” to the exclusions of the ivory beauty, or the ruddy freckled, or the deep burgundy of humanity would be a rather bland existence would it not? For God Sake stop seeing not only in Black and White but tan. Of greater importance is the fact that we have to preserve within the context of the endangerment in the world, our species by actions we ourselves are participating in. The concern, my fellow Americans, is not with the color of our complexions but the existence of us as a species. If we care about the continuation of the animal and plant species on our beautiful and fragile planet shouldn’t we also worry about humans as a species and focus our court battles and media attention not on fomenting inter-species fear and violence but the shared challenge of all of us surviving upon earth at
