Politicisation of Food in Malawi by PP and JB Malawi Human Rights Commission Presentation in Geneva; 10th March 2014 The issue of politicisation of food in particular distribution of relief items such as maize through political party channels was also raised by the Commission as one of the challenges in food accessibility particularly for the marginalized and vulnerable categories of society. The Commission reiterated to the Council the position it has variously raised with Government that, the politicisation of relief items does not guarantee equitable distribution of the commodity to all deserving vulnerable persons. It raises the possibility of putting political priorities above fundamental human rights priorities with the underlying consequence that those that are not associated or perceived not to be associated with the political grouping in question are most often left out. This defeats the very essence of a human rights-based approach where the issue of equitable access as a matter of right is relegated to a position of access being accorded to a privileged few.
