Politicization of Nigeria Police: A Threat to Democracy Police - TopicsExpress

Politicization of Nigeria Police: A Threat to Democracy Police institution in a global sense is an organized organization with the responsibility of maintaining law and order, detention of crime, apprehension of law breakers and prosecution of accused persons in law court. In other words, the police is expected to enforce laws of the land and not to interprete them. Nigerian Police though established by colonial masters had undergone some reforms particularly in this democratic dispensation. Policing in democracy is fundamentally important as a civil institution. But in a situation where the police is militarized and politicized in a democratically constituted society, the police becomes a threat. It should be noted that the police is an institution of government. The personnel or managers of this institution change time to time but the institution always remains. It therefore follows that any political party in power must trade with caution with regard to the institutions of the state like the police. In short, we can ask this question: What would happen to the police if the opposition party becomes the ruling party tomorrow? Nigerian police must learn from other societies where the organization is apolitical and peoples oriented. It is not enough to write on the walls of our police stations that police is your friend when in reality, the police is an enemy of the people, preventing an Assembly of Nigerian people from performing its constitutional responsibility. It is so sad that the police command always maintains double and unconstitutional standards. For instance, the police that claims Tambuwal is no longer the Speaker of House of Rep following his defection, however he was addressed as Speaker in their press release of what transpired at the National Assembly. This is gross abuse of power and I expect the IGP to honourably do the needful by resigning as the police boss. The Nigerian people MUST resist any attempt by persons or group of persons who are bent to truncate our democracy. We must not allow the prediction of US(that Nigeria as a country end in 2015) comes to pass.
