Politics Parliament to put more effort into tackling land confiscation issues Parliament has decided to urge relevant ministries to submit reports on land issues once every two months in an attempt to deal more efficiently with land disputes. Thura U Shwe Mann, the current Speaker of Parliament, has called for the participation of the media in determining whether or not land was confiscated illegally. However, U Tin Htut, chairman of the Land Disputes Investigation Commission, has warned MPs not to take advantage of discussing land confiscation issues for political as well as personal gain. There have been growing concerns over third parties’ attempt to persuade farmers to come out to the streets and protest. The Land Disputes Investigation Commission has reportedly uncovered cases where government officials have confiscated land for personal gain. Land confiscation was rampant in the past in Myanmar with businesses, authorities and the army seizing farmland for various purposes, paying minimal or no compensation.
