Politics question. Dont worry, its a short(ish) one. Im interested to hear what people think. In the past few months Ive become more interested in the political and electoral process than in politics itself: the way Parliament makes its decisions, as opposed to the decisions themselves. In this way, I have become pleased that we have a two-and-a-half-party system, as opposed to the clear binary of the United States. Weve had a definite third party for over a century now: Labour, then the Liberals, then the SDP, then the Lib Dems. I think this is a good thing; I think anything that allows Parliament to hold genuine debates, as opposed to party-political set pieces, is a good thing. I saw a poll in The Guardian (shush) predicting the 2015 election results, based on present polling. It predicted a Labour majority of 4 (very dramatic), with only 11 Lib Dem seats. They currently have 55. All mid-term opinion polls show far more dramatic swings than occur in the actual election, but even so: that would practically eliminate the third party as a political force (the poll predicted no UKIP gains). Theyd be one step above the Northern Irish parties. I dont want this to happen - but I wont vote Lib Dem. Indeed, whatever party I support, I presumably think everyone else should support them as well. Therefore, in theory, if everyone voted ideally, wed have a one-party system. Thoughts? How do I resolve this conundrum?
