Poll: IG plans mass redeployment of 36 CPs There are indications that the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba, may soon redeploy all the commissioners of police in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory as part of measures to enhance successful conduct of the February general elections. Saturday PUNCH learnt that the redeployment was one of the strategies the Police Management Team was planning to adopt to make the polls credible and transparent. Though the date for the redeployment has not been fixed, it was gathered that a signal to the effect would be issued from the Force Headquarters in Abuja before January 31, 2015. It was also gathered that the police high command had prepared the mandate that would guide its personnel during the elections. When contacted, the Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, said it is the prerogative of the IGP to redeploy police personnel as he deems fit. Asked what time the redeployment of the CPs would take place, Ojukwu said, “The men would be redeployed at the appropriate time.” Responding to questions on whether members of the public could stay back and monitor the polls after voting, the police spokesman said the voters were free to monitor their votes as long as they did not break the law or breach the public peace. Ojukwu also said the police had been working closely with the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure that Nigerians elect their leaders in hitch-free polls. According to him, senior police officer visits INEC office almost every day to work out the modalities for the conduct of the elections and resolve observed challenges. Copyright PUNCH.
