Pollen allergy affects 50 million people each year. Statistics show that 20% people are affected in USA alone. In some countries percentage goes as high as 50%. In Islamabad municipal limits, 30% people are affected each year. Pollen allergies manifest itself as follows: Signs and Symptoms Of Allergy A patient with Pollen Allergy may suffer from any or all of the following complaints: Running Nose and Sneezing. Difficulty in breathing, Tightness in the chest or Asthma with wheezing. Cough and a discharge from the back of the nose in to the throat (Post-nasal Drip). Red and Itchy Eyes. Itching on the Skin. Above signs and symptom are manifested when pollen count rises to its high or moderate level. In Islamabad Sector H-8, pollen count ( in per cubic meter of air-pcma) as declared by Metereological Department of Pakistan, today on March 19, 2014 is as follows: Paper Mulberry 2,480 Very High Acacia 00 Absent Eucalyptus 00 Absent Pines 40 Moderate Grasses 18 Moderate Cannabis 00 Absent Dandelion 00 Absent Alternaria 15 Low Consequent upon declaration of the pollen count for paper mulberry and Pines as 2480 (High) and 49 (Moderate) pcma respectively by Meteorological Department of Pakistan as on March 19, 2014, all Medical Centers of CDA DHS in addition are therefore declared as Pollen Allergy Clinics till end of April 2014. All I/C Medical Officers are therefore advised to adopt following measures as to control occurrence of pollen allergy in the city: i. Social mobilization and consumer health education. ii. Indenting anti allergy medicines in sufficient quantities. iii. Checking oxygen cylinders on daily basis and keep these ready-to-use for the patients. iv. Keeping nebulizers and required medicines ready in specific pollen allergy trays. Para Medical staff has been trained to receive such patients cautiously and timely refer to doctors. In case of status asthmaticus or symptoms which can not be managed at DHS medical centers, Medical officers are instructed that such patient must be timely referred to the nearest secondary or tertiary care hospital by availing services of CARES1122. Director Health CDA has arranged a training workshop for doctors and para-medical staff of DHS on March 22 and 29, 2014 respectively for sharpening knowledge of the staff in clinical management of pollen allergy cases. In the year 2013, DHS received, treated and managed 5150 cases of pollen allergy. This year lesser number of cases are expected because of cutting of 10000 trees of mulberry plant last year and more rainfalls expected in the months of March and April, 2014.
