Polls show more and more people dont identify with either major - TopicsExpress

Polls show more and more people dont identify with either major party. But according to a prominent online dating service, party preference is playing an increasingly important role in deciding whom to date. Similarly, many of my students say they dont see much difference between the parties but wouldnt consider marrying someone whose party preference was different from their own. How to explain this inconsistency? Have the parties become proxies for deeply contrasting sets of personal values even though their policies no longer seem as distinct? Or is it that people have come to disdain public partisanship even as they grow more personally partisan? Bonus question: If you lean Democratic, would you marry (or date) a Republican, and vice versa?
