Pollution 11-12-2014 And Seychelles’ largest floating trash goes to... A hugecorroded barge measuring approximately ten metres by five metres has been floating near Ile Perseverance for several months and nobody seems to know how it got there in the first place.Who is to blame for this irresponsible act? By A. De Giorgio We’ve seen it all, from worn out washing machines and other discarded goods strewn on the side of the road, not forgetting a hidden dump site at Au Cap. Last September, what was believed to be the largest piece of trash in Seychelles was found a few metres from the Port Glaud church in the shape of a heavy machinery that was abandoned so long ago that plants were growing around the vehicle. A new contender for the the title of Seychelles’ largest trash has now been discovered; a huge corroded barge has been abandoned near Ile Perseverance, taking the pollution issue in Seychelles to a whole new level.According to several residents from Ile Perseverance, the abandoned barge has been floating for probably a year now and nobody seems to know how it got there in the first place. This monstrosity that measures approximately ten metres by five metres cannot be seen by motoristswho pass by but can easily be spotted by pedestrians who take the shortcut route between Perseverance One and the adjacent side road opposite the Palais de Justice. A resident of the area, who happens to be a marine engineer, described the barge as the typical flat-bottomed base used for the transportationof heavy goods. Furthermore, he believed that the large winches on the barge are in such terrible condition that it would be very costly to repair all of them in Seychelles which perhaps is one of the reasonswhy this huge barge has been abandoned. TODAY contacted the relevant authorities to try and identify the origin of the barge but, both the ministry of Land Use and Habitatthe District Administration of Perseverance One were unaware of the abandoned barge. Meanwhile, it continues to corrode in the seawhilst threatening to kill marine life which could lead to the creation of a dead zone.
