Polo Panthers take down Class 2 Lathrop Mules 30-7 Polo traveled to Lathrop last Friday night for a match-up against the Class 2 Lathrop Mules in what was one of the longest games Polo has ever played. It started Friday night at 7 PM and did not finish until early Saturday morning around 12:45 AM. Mother nature delivered many different weather scenarios throughout the evening, warm temperatures, a little rain and a beautiful rainbow started the evening off. As the game was played the weather progressed into thunder and lightening which set in around half time as the Panthers led the Mules 8-0. There was a lightening and storm delay that lasted over an hour during the half time as everyone was asked to go to their vehicles. This delay did not dampen the Polo Panthers team spirit. Polo came out in the third quarter ready to add to their lead. Polo ended the third quarter with another touchdown, but was unable to get the extra point. The Panthers allowed Lathrop to get on the board for the first time in the third quarter with just a few minutes left on the clock. Lathrop had 7 and Polo 14 starting the fourth quarter. As lightening struck all around the Lathrop football field there was one more delay for over 30 minutes with only 4:38 left in the game. Both teams came out ready to battle in what seemed to be a game that wouldn’t end. Polo held Lathrop to 7 while they added two more touchdowns and got the extra points for both in the final 4 minutes of the game. Polo beat Lathrop 30-7. This win was monumental for the Panthers as they are now first in District 8 rankings after beating 2 Class 2 schools. Polo’s offense rushed 60/417 yards. Passing they went 1 of 5 for 4 yards. Wiley Martin went 25/193 yards, 2 TD, 1 PAT run and 1 PAT pass. Jacob Hicks: 17/117 yards, 1 TD and 1 PAT run, Ty Parker: 8/55 yards and 1 PAT catch and Gunnar Martin: 8/49 yards with 1 TD. Defensively Polo played tough against a very competitive team. Jacob Hicks had 8 tackles, Ryan Cooper 7 tackles, Gunnar Martin 6 tackles and Jake Leonard 6 tackles and 1 fumble recovery. Wiley Martin ended the night with 2 sacks. Safety Caleb Bolling had 3 tackles, 2 of them were big hits that caused fumbles. Coach Kyle Ross was pleased with his team’s second win and a record now of 2-0 and had this to say after the game, “Our offensive line play improved a significant amount this past week, which really allowed us to close out the game on the ground and our defense continued to play very sound and very physical football.” Polo will host a Conference game against Gallatin this week on Friday, September 5, at 7 PM.
