Polo takes center stage in Venezuela To an outsider, the political landscape of Venezuela might not have appeared to have changed much since the departure of Hugo Chavez, but the presence of polo has returned with gusto. In the northern coastal village of Tucacas the Caracas Polo Club is currently hosting the Torneo de Polo Ernesto Vogeler Mendoza Cup, a 20-goal tournament that has attracted six teams, and the presence and influence of Victor Vargas has not gone unnoticed. Leading his Caracas Polo team in the competition, Vargas has imported teammate Juan Martin Nero, one of only a handful of the game’s 10-goal players. The field of teams include: Caracas Polo (Victor Vargas, Alfredo Vargas, Juan Martin Nero and Martin Espain); Los Samanes (Carlos Silva, Facundo Castagnola, Agustin Canale, Marcelo Frayssinet); Los Samanes II (Luis Eduardo Silva, Toto Collardin, Juan Brane and Andres James); Sebucan (Gonzalo Mendoza, Sebastian Harriott, Pablo Jauretche and Toto Urturi); Eliette Polo (Elias Celis, Jose Rivas, Juan Harriott and Julian Diaz); and Mindanao (Jaime Restrepo, Tomas Franco, Santiago Cernadas and Jose Villamil). The fourth high-goal tournament of the year, a breakout year for polo in Venezuela will conclude with the 26-goal Gold Cup (September 18-October 2; and the 22-goal Gold Cup, September 20-October 5.
