Polynesia settled from South America? Stuff and nonsense! By men sailing there on a balsa-wood raft? Poppycock! And this fellow Thor Heyerdahl is going to prove it? Absolute rubbish! Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl and five companions did prove it was possible, however, as they sailed their balsa-wood raft Kon-Tiki (named for the ancient Incan sun-god Viracocha) from Peru to the Tuamotu Islands in French Polynesia. After a voyage lasting 101 days and 4300 miles, raft and crew landed at the island of Raroia on August 7, 1947. Sixty-six years ago today.
