Pondering a thoughtful discussion with a coworker yesterday: she found it disturbing and dissonant when a coworker discussed her own acquisition of a spiffy, sporty luxury car, and pronounced herself blessed. After some brief thought, I must agree with my thoughtful coworker. Blessed can encompass many aspects of ones life: family, security and safety, a regular check doing work you love... But BUYING INTO OUR CONSUMER MIND- SET and thinking that your fancy- schmancy, super- trendy, show- offy new car is part of blessings of which God has deemed you the worthy recipient--- NO. I call that shallow, convenient, and WORSE, I find it disconcerting and off- putting that youd give my loving God any blame for your enthusiastic buy- in to the showy display specifically mentioned in The New Testament--- in an unflattering light. If youve got blessings a-plenty, you KNOW what Jesus advised you to do. Plunking down a chunk of cash for a fancy, fun car that lets everybody in your vicinity know what a show- off you are just doesnt mean God had anything at all to do with it. Jesus was a pretty humble guy, as I remember.
