Pongring le Maku-Banrumei (Base on True story) The Bachelor and the Feast of Merit Once upon a time in the land of Zeliangrong live Mr. Ma-ngamthuai, who is both human and god. At night he becomes human and by day he live as Guaichangc (Mithun). There was also a certain beautiful girl who live in the same humble hamlet, whose beauty wass appreciated by the villagers. (Sorry i don’t get the name of this village beauty, because the elders have forgotten- and if anyone knows please feel free to contribute). The boy and the girl fall in love with each other, the boy visited the girl during night and sit with her by the fireside sipping hot boiled water while she weave traditional cloths. At daybreak the boy would go to the grassland grazing as Mithun. Although the girl knew that the boy possesses the attribute of both human and god she wouldnt give up her love for the boy. The humble girl weave cloths at night and the boy continue to visit her falling deeper in love. The girl’s father was a rich man, he decided to perform Maku-Banrumei (festival/feast of merit). He need the help of the villagers, he asked the help of the villagers and invited them to the feast. As the day approaches for the feast of Merit, the villagers asked the owner of the feast; to kill the Mithun which grazes down the grassland. If he doesnt kill the said Mithun asked by the villagers, then the elders of the villagers said, “KAIRUANLOULAK GE,” which means the villagers would not come to the feast. The feast would not mean any meaning and would be a wastage. So the search for the Mithun has to begin. The girl overheard the discussion, which would meant that her lover would be killed on the day of her family feast. Since people knew that the Mithun is in love with the family daughter, and being jealous of the boy’s attributes of being human and god, the villagers wanted to kill him and eat him away. The villagers asked her where he would be about, and thus she told them that he would be down in the vales grazing. On the night when the boy visited her, she told him about the discussion of the villagers to kill him. So she told her not to go down the vales tomorrow but to go to the mountain While the villagers would search for him in the vales. So on the first day of the search the villagers failed to catch him. Again on the night the villagers came to her again and asked her where he would be about. She told her he would be in the mountains. ---- when the boy visited her at night, the girl whose love is all for him said, Pongringle- please don’t go to mountains tomorrow, for the villagers will search for you in the mountains. The girl so deep in love with him was trying to fool the villagers in order to save her man. But the villagers insisted her again and again and her father came to her and said, if you don’t tell the villagers of the whereabouts of the animal, our feast of merit would be cancelled since the villagers won’t feast without that animal being butchered. So at last the girl spelled them out the exact place of the Mithun was and the villagers came and caught the animal and butchered. When it was butchered all the meat cut into pieces were moving until the girl come and looked at the curry pots and persuaded to calm down. She did not eat the meat cooked for the feast. And she sang.. Magianlu or known as also Makukailu Puipu kai maku kais u e ye Pongring ta Guai (Cow) suna dow e e Ponring zanc mei tu mak ge e Pongring zanc langrian elou phian Guaipi riang gai mak ge e Ramlu le changh erei echui lo Bui suna changh rein i cho e e Taruai changh gangru aru nzai khang.!¬` As the ceremony begin, the time has come for the villagers to pull up the head of the Mithun to hang on to Taraengkai. But when the villager tried to pull up the head of the said Mithun, it was so heavy and they couldn’t hang up after so many tries. So the elders persuaded the girl to persuade the animal head. After the girl persuaded the animal head, the villagers pulled the head up and hanged on it. Everyone was ready for the game, the girl came below the hanged Mithun head. The rope was bad enough for the heavy Mithun head, the rope broke and fell down. The horn of the mithun struck her chest between the two breast of the girl and she died there at the spot. It is believe that this Ma-gianlu is sang at Thaunramnang house- which is believed to be the place where they celebrated the feast of Merit.(it is said that This is one of the real story which comes alive with the Magian-Luh and speaks that every Zeliangrong knows the story)
