Poor Americans are spending money on lotto tickets instead of saving for retirement, and they stand to lose a lot for it. Households earning less than $13,000 per year spend 3 percent of their income on lottery tickets. “That’s $100 per month thrown away,” says Ric Edelman, CEO of Edelman Financial Services. “If they invested that money at 7.2 percent per year for 40 years, they’d amass more than $277,000.”
