Poor poor Johnny! He was so anxious to get out of this cage and finally be able to take a bath, so much so that he bit me on the inside of the thigh last night when I wouldnt let him dump his water bowl during his few minutes of free time while I clean his cage and change is drinking water. Sadly the poor guy did not get his wish today though and will not for at least another week. :( We just got back from the vet and although his huge wound has healed up pretty well and he was able to get some of the stitches out, it is not all healed enough. His wound was bigger than my entire hand when it started and there was not a lot of skin left to close it all back up. The vet stretched as much as possible and was able to make a Y shape enclosure, with the center very tight and barely connecting. At first the concern was that the center stitches would tear back open if he moved too much. Well luckily that did not happen, but unfortunately that center was not able to stretch enough to heal back together either. So if we took those stitches out now, it would just rip back apart. The vet does a new laser treatment on wounds, that is supposed to promote skin growth and healing, so that is our next step. He got his first treatment today and has to go back every other day, for a total of 5 treatments. This will hopefully encourage the wound to close up, but it is an if and may not work at all. If it doesnt work, then the next step will be to sedate him and take him back to surgery again. They would then reopen the wound, freshen it up and hope the skin has gained back enough elasticity to stretch it closed this time. That would mean another risk in sedating him, and another 2 weeks of being in the cage, still unable to take a bath. :( Poor Johnny, his life really sucks right now. I will say he was a really good patient today though, it only took 2 of us to hold him still while the vet cut his stitches out and lasered him. His is also a huge star at the vet office. They dont get many geese in there, so all the ladies were very fascinated with him. Some were quite afraid even, but he was a great gentleman and allowed them all to come pet him and take pictures of him. Lol He wasnt quite as cooperative when we got home and and I tried to take pictures of his wound to show you, so this is the best I got and you cant really see the open spot in the center still. Please keep Johnny in your thoughts, and hope that this week of treatment will heal him up, so he can go back to his ladies and finally get to take a bath and swim again!
