Poots addresses Ward Sisters, Charge Nurses & Team Leaders at NIPEC Conference Health Minister Edwin Poots has today recognised the important role that nurses play across the Health Service. The Minister was addressing a delegation of approximately 100 Ward Sisters, Charge Nurses and District Nursing Sisters/Team Leaders during their annual conference where he highlighted that their profession not only delivers complex care but most importantly is a profession which places the patient at the centre. The Minister said: “Your job is important, it’s a job that takes time and it’s a job that deserves time, that is why under Delivering Care I have just approved a move towards making the Ward Sister 100% supervisory in order to fulfil ward leadership responsibilities; supervise clinical care; oversee and maintain nursing care standards; teach practice and procedures; be a role model for good professional practice and behaviour; oversee the ward environment and assume high visibility as nurse leader for the ward.” He went on to say “We face a challenging, but exciting agenda. Quality and standards will be driven up without compromise. I know that our patients are in the best hands possible and I know that your ‘can do attitudes’ will deliver the transformation we all want to see, but most importantly you will ensure that during this period of change there will be no compromising of Safety, Quality or Patient Experience.” The Minister urged everyone in the room to report concerns appropriately and he reiterated his commitment to investigate concerns and take action where necessary.
