Pop always had a garden. Thats just how he was raised. My grand mother too. They never ate out. Never... It was unheard of. Yeah, The Beacon after church on Sunday maybe... But I can say, without hesitation, neither ever got served the wrong order in a drive thru.... Cause neither ever drove thru one. Since Ive been living here in my great grandmothers room... In my grandparents house... Ive had so many memories run through my head. Since its mowing season, my attention has been on the little house Pop built to store all the vegetables from his garden at the edge of the yard. All the basics were on the shelf... Except potatoes... Mammy put them under the house. No idea why... Never asked. If you had her cooking... You wouldnt ask either. Honestly, the old house? Its falling in... any clear thinking person would have it torn down... But not me. I played in that house all through my childhood. Now, some 30 years later... It stands tall... Waiting for my daughter to be bold enough to explore it... Shes still a little young, but soon Im sure. The little house has brought a smile to my heart tonight... Because in my Mammys kitchen tonight... I canned some beans. Old school yall. Only a gallon... But to me. It was a big deal. It means carrying on an art that was lost in our family. Honestly? Probably lost to a drive thru if the truth be told. I may not fill that little house this year with rows of pickles, tomatoes, beans, okra, and other delights... Cause... Well, canning vegetables is hard work people. Real hard. We snapped beans today. As a family. My kiddo and I. Just like I snapped beans with my gaga. Just like she did with her mama. A tradition reborn. And I tell you good Christian people. Aint nothing a female can do in that kitchen I cant do... Come to think of it... When it comes to this lump asleep in my lap... There isnt ANYTHING a female can do better than me.
