Pop culture is on my mind and here are my opinions. I have always had this internal conflict in the past with accepting pop culture and having this internal conflict of interest. because something never felt right about it. So for a few months I tried to listen to Megalithic artist such as Beyonce, Rihanna, Katy Perry ect. I thought maybe the original reason I didnt like them was because I was hating on them and being close minded and decided to listen to them and see whats up. At first I thought wow this stuff is catchy why not like them? But then I thought long and hard about it. And came to the conclusion, that Pop culture, and the artists that represent it are an extension of Capitalism, Ive always thought why dont these huge artist use their platform to cause change, there are so many prevailing issues in the world, Starvation, disease, child trafficking, environmental destruction, Agricultural animal enslavement and so on. I thought to myself, why would these artist vaguely talk about these subjects giving a few thousands here and there, for tax evasion purposes. I realized its because their platform isnt to cause change, but to provide capital for their brand. But its the way in which theyre doing it thats troubling. Theres an epidemic of low self esteem in the millennial generation, despite huge campaigns that have popularized such terms as love yourself youre perfect the way you are ect. People still have such low self esteem, I wondered why that is, and the answer is the media and the pop cultural industry, using photoshopped images hyping up artist and shaming people who dont live up to the expectation of the corporation. For example Nike will create a culture in which youre not cool to have the hottest new shoe that was most likely made in a sweatshop so people will work their butts off to be able to afford it, as a means of being culturally accepted or deemed cool. The problem is corporation have shaped our culture therefore what we perceive to be cool or in, or worth emulating is directly influenced and made for us by corporations whos interest is directly and above all else making profits. Pop stars such as Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Jay Z, Kim Kardashian and on and on ect, are icons of this corporation that use their platform to in turn make profits having the perks of getting a cut, while the rest of the money goes to the corporations that represent them. The problem is that the things that should shape and influence our culture are things that are actually relevant to it, such as, Politics, education, civil rights, human rights, the environment, liberation, and so on. Music, fashion and all that jazz, should be second place and something that accentuates the experience here on earth, not dominate it, and certainly not dominate it so much so that a person cares more about a Nike shoe or emulating an image theyre bombarded with, more so than their personal health of themselves, or those around them including the ecosystem and its vast inhabitants, that are directly affected by the impact of capitalism. This is why I cant support Beyonce, and other mainstream artist that I see all apart of the same capitalistic system of consumerism, vacant, absent minded, superficiality.
