Pope Francis alluding to Charlie Hebdo: While free speech is a fundamental human right, when for the common good, there are limits to free speech. If my good friend ... says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch, Francis said, throwing a faux punch toward one of his aides aboard the papal plane. Its normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others. Pope Francis said that many people speak ill faith and “make a game out of the religions of others.” It is this, he said, that is problematic. “They are provocateurs. And what happens to them is what would happen to Dr. Gasparri if he says a curse word against my mother,” the pontiff said. “There is a limit.” Here is how I might put it: if you smear a layer of BBQ sauce over your forearm, and then put it in the mouth of a pit bull, and then are surprised that you get your arm bit off, then you are an idiot. You are a greater idiot if you thought the wild pit bull should restrain itself. Yes, the pit bull should be put down for its act, but the fact remains: you put your arm in its mouth; expect to get bit. Lesson: you only have the freedom of speech ONLY if it is for the common good. If you use it to be stupid as a provocateur then expect to get punched in the face, and these guys got punched in the face. Lesson for Christians: if you are going to confront Islam, and think you are ready to die, just make sure it is for the common good so when you die popes dont remember you as a provocateur.
