Pope Francis will be sending a very powerful signal that the Catholic Church is not on the side of the rich, but on the side of the poor, says Austen Ivereigh, author of a new biography on the pontiff. In situations of oppression, where a very few control the political and economic system to the detriment of the poor majority, the church should be standing with the defenseless poor majority, because that’s where Jesus was.
