Port Hedland Needs a marina. It will be a game changer for all of us. Written by Dave McGowan. Dave has the full supported of this page and administration. Marina Precinct at the existing Yacht Club location In one single swoop, it will change the face of the port town, and open the doors for many facilities and businesses, as well as the obvious benefits to boat owners and the local community. BHP are hell bent on keeping their options open to rape the west end, and thus, the more they stop happening, the more options they have. They dont care about the people of the town !. Its just a factor in their way to profit. Many millions have been spent on the current location design at the Spoil bank, it is a open playground area at present going to waste. At the yacht club, we are stifled by lack of access to the ocean, by the spoil sand that BHP put there in the first place many years ago ! We all want a marina. Lets make sure it happens for the good of all. Leave it at the Spoil Bank. Some benefits are: Wide area for hard stand, parking, recreation options, and close to the deep access to the ocean. We need to allow some use by commercial as they have nowhere to go, the port keeps pushing them out. (line boats, workboats, charters etc) The bussel of a working marina is more suitable in a industrial area, than in the midst of a residential area near Cooke Point. There will never be 2 locations in town for a marina/services so make it one practical one. The town has waited far too long for this facility, and with only one shot at it, it needs to be a compromise on location, uses and zoning around it. With the will of the people and businesses in town, the marina at the Spoilbank will be the catalyst for many ventures and great days on the ocean. If a smaller marina is located at Cooke Point, with no commercial, liftout facilities, and no spare land, it will be a white elephant for the Latte lovers and impressionable only. Lets all work together to make this happen for everyone, so we can thrive together ! Dont forget. BHP supported the marina with firstly wanting their tugs in there, then FIFO housing on the hospital site (short term accom), supported the tranfer of $40 Million from the airport development fund for Kingsford Business Park payments, and now, with changing options for them, are trying to kill it off. Its not ON ! What we need is real talk about this, and community support. Ive noticed that it appears that most are just sitting back on the backsides (locals and would be users) waiting for it to be handed to us on a plate. We cant work like that. More public focus needs to be done on this, and the Council need to be firm in their resolve to keep the Spoilbank. None of this having a bet each way. Spread the word about benefits to the town, with it at the spoil bank. Rerun the development plans again at the shopping centres, Facebook, Yacht Club, Boating clubs. We cant let BHP get away with it again, that will be the last straw for west end. Turn the tide of public opinion. ! Make the public have an opinion once they have all the facts of the benefits. I heard a wisper that there is a discussion about this on the 19th. Thats a good secret if its true? Dave McGowan
