Port Washington Police Department would like to remind the public - TopicsExpress

Port Washington Police Department would like to remind the public of a known scam targeting the elderly. Callers target elderly people and tell them they are a family member (usually a grand child) in trouble out of the country and needing money wired to them. They ask that you not tell the parents for verification purposes. If you or a family receives one of these phone calls DO NOT RESPOND. Try to contact the grandchild or family member to verify that they are okay. NEVER WIRE MONEY based on a request by telephone or e-mail - especially if it is being sent overseas. The sad truth is that there is nothing that local law enforcement can do about these scams, but do their best to inform the public not to fall victim. Please share this information with elderly friends and family. Make them aware of the danger of these scams. For additional information on this scam, please see the link below fbi.gov/news/stories/2012/april/grandparent_040212
