Portable Altarpiece of the Madonna and Child FILIPINO 19th Century, most probably Bohol judging by the coloration. Wood and polychromy A large yet portable altarpiece featuring a central panel carved with an image of the Madonna and Child. The Madonna is seated on a bank of ensaimada (brioche) clouds while an upturned crescent moon supports the weight of the seated Virgin. The Christ child seems to be sitting propped-up on a type of daybed or diban. The scene is framed by a pair of scalloped-shaped curtains parted to reveal the mis-en-sence of the mother and child. The central panel is flanked by two flanged leaf supports terminating in volutes. The flanges are carved with local flora in high relief. The whole is capped by an undulating ball-topped finial and elevated on a base with two block supports. Dimensions: 98.7 cm H X 62.5 cm W X 21.25 cm D (39.5 in H X 25 in W X 8.5 in D)
