Portage County Folks.... The State Patrol and other departments are operating numerous checkpoints in the county tonight. One of these will take place in Brimfield on SR43. Brimfield officers are assisting in the efforts by providing saturation patrol units to specifically look for drunken drivers. We do not have officers at the checkpoints due to manpower. Frankly, my officers need some time off. While I understand the argument associated with checkpoints, the basic argument is faulty because numerous courts, including the Supreme Court, have upheld these as constitutional...providing certain obligations are met by law enforcement. These obligations include advertising the checkpoints and providing an escape route prior to entering the checkpoint. Those are always done with checkpoints we are associated with. If you do not care to drive through a checkpoint, please use an alternate route. If you care to complain about the checkpoint using comparisons made to Nazi Germany, please use an alternate Facebook page.
