Portrayals of diversity in comics can have such a ripple effect - TopicsExpress

Portrayals of diversity in comics can have such a ripple effect and be extremely meaningful to people. I can’t begin to tell you the depth of personal connections that readers have expressed to me that they feel to characters that connect with a background or culture that they identify with. From the deaf culture expressed with Echo, to her Native American Heritage and her Latin heritage to her being a strong Female Character. These make an incredible impact to readers who may not be used to seeing that kind of diversity to identify with in many stories. The feedback I’ve received about Kabuki from women who connect to a lead character that happens to be female and interact with other characters when the story does not revolve around the female as soley the male lead love interest, but who has a story of her own… and the feedback from women and men who connect to seeing a lead character that happens to be Asian and express their point of view and their background as a matter of course in the story… or even from readers that have connected to the characters having an unusual family dynamic, a mixed family background… Or a lead character like Akemi in Kabuki who does not identify in a traditional binary gender label… or characters overcoming childhood trauma to make their own way… these kinds of personal connections and expression from readers have opened up my eyes to ripple effects that it has in readers that I could have never foreseen. Don’t be afraid to make your own story with your own characters. Don’t feel like it has to look like the majority of the other most popular characters that you see. drdavidmrmack.tumblr/post/86620226127/americachavez-william-h-foster-iii-comic
