Portuguese classes in Favela, at Barraco#55 Do you want to learn Portuguese, experience everyday life in a favela, make local friends and contribute to the local community, take classes at Barraco #55 in Complexo do Alemao, a favela in Rio de Janeiro. The classes are given by a local teacher, who speaks basic English and has experience with teaching Portuguese to foreigners. Levels vary from Portuguese for beginners, advanced to classes designed for a specific goal (Portuguese for researchers, for journalists, for volunteers, etc.) The prices of the course are much lower than at other language schools in the city centre and South zone. Part of the fee goes to the teacher, and part goes to cultural activities for the community organised by Barraco#55. The Portuguese classes are a way to professionalize the teaching skills of the local teacher, to improve his English and to create a serious opportunity to generate an income. Barraco # 55 is a community based research and arts center. We develop cultural and social projects in a favela (low-income area) in Rio de Janeiro. Researchers, students and artists can stay in our artist in residence programme and explore, in close collaboration with the community, local themes such as urbanism, technology, tourism, community art and sustainability, theoretically as well as practically. Our general aim is to link and exchange local and external (outside the community) knowledge and culture, seeking (1.) popular mobilization through art and culture and (2.) the transformation of a low-income area into an area of creation, innovation and cultural exchange.
