Position Announcement: Regional Programme Coordinator for Central Asia, AKMI Aga Khan Music Initiative (AKMI) is a programme of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. The Aga Khan Trust for Culture is an agency of the Aga Khan Development Network Position to be based in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan or Dushanbe, Tajikistan Relevant Sectors: Communications, Media, Arts Education, Administration, NGO Strategy Development, Assessment and Evaluation Organization Brief: The Aga Khan Music Initiative (AKMI) is an interregional music and arts education programme with worldwide performance, outreach, mentoring, and artistic production activities. The Initiative supports talented musicians and music educators working to preserve, transmit, and further develop their musical heritage in contemporary forms. The Music Initiative began its work in Central Asia, with projects in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan, and subsequently expanded its cultural development activities to include artistic communities and audiences in the Middle East and North Africa, South Asia, and West Africa. The Initiative designs and implements a country-specific set of activities for each country into which it invests, and works to promote revitalization of cultural heritage both as a source of livelihood for musicians and as a means to strengthen pluralism in nations where it is challenged by social, political, and economic constraints. Position Description: AKMI seeks a self-motivated, well-organized individual who thrives on working independently for a long-term consulting assignment in Central Asia. Applications are strongly encouraged from nationals of a Central Asian nation who have a college or university degree from an institution based in North America or Europe. Initial appointment is for a six-month probationary period, whose successful completion will lead to a renewable two-year contract. Reporting to the Geneva-based director of AKMI, the Regional Coordinator for Central Asia will work with longtime AKMI partner organizations and grantees to maximize interregional cooperation and develop programmatic synergies as well as provide regional oversight of AKMI activities through assessment, evaluation, and regular reporting to both AKMI management and local AKDN offices. Responsibilities: • Regional Coordination and Relationship Management: Provides day-to-day coordination and oversight of AKMI’s regional network of local NGOs and public-private partnerships engaged in the revitalization of music and music education in Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan (Northern Territories), and Tajikistan; in a consulting capacity, advises AKMI partners and collaborators on best practices in administration, management, communications, and public relations, and, as needed, serves as troubleshooter and ombudsman. • Communications: Assures that appropriate AKDN resident representative offices and AKMI/AKTC management are kept informed and updated on AKMI projects and activities, provides coverage of Central Asia activities for AKMI newsletters, and manages effective flow of information among AKMI regional partners and collaborators. Updates of the programme website. • Coordination of financial reporting and budgeting. • Monitoring and Reporting: Attends events and conducts site visits related to AKMI-supported projects and activities, maintains frequent contact with AKMI partners and collaborators in the field, and files regular reports to update AKMI management on new developments. • Strategy Development: Assists local partners and collaborators in developing maximally effective strategic plans for both new and ongoing projects and activities. • Assessment and Evaluation: Provides periodic quantitative and qualitative assessment and evaluation of activities and projects supported by AKMI in accordance with templates and criteria furnished by AKMI/AKTC management. Qualifications: Education: B.A. degree; M.A. preferred Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English, and fluency or near fluency in spoken and written Russian as well as, preferably, working knowledge of one of the indigenous languages of Central Asia. Experience: Preference will be given to candidates with administrative, management, or oversight experience in an international organization or NGO, or in the fields of cultural diplomacy, cultural heritage, international relations, or development. Personal Profile: Demonstrated interest in the arts and humanities and familiarity with the indigenous cultural traditions of Central Asia; interest in contemporary arts; commitment to the ideals of cultural pluralism, internationalism, and cultural development work; ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and remain flexible; effective interpersonal skills; energetic and enthusiastic.
