Position Available: Minister of Music and Organist Position Description Minister of Music and Organist Park Avenue Christian Church Affiliated with The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ New York, New York The Minister of Music and Organist is an integral part of the ministry of the Park Avenue Christian Church. This is currently a part-time position that works closely with the Senior Pastor and church administrators to equip, encourage and empower the congregation to fulfill its vision and mission. Position reports to: Senior Pastor Specific Responsibilities of the Minister of Music: As the primary organist and director of choirs, the Minister of Music serves as a resource to support, foster and coordinate the worship life of the congregation through congregational, choral, and instrumental music. As a member of the professional staff, the Minister of Music works with the clergy, staff, and volunteers to plan and coordinate worship services and related activities. The Minister of Music supervises music personnel and will work with the Senior Pastor to establish a Music Team that meets regularly and provides feedback, critique and support for the worship life of the congregation. Professional and pastoral activities include: 1. Planning, directing and performing the music for all regular and special services of worship, in consultation with the minister/s. These responsibilities are to be performed with a pastoral mindset, an awareness of an increasingly multicultural congregation, an openness to and familiarity with diverse styles of music, and a sensitivity to the balance of familiar and unfamiliar hymns. The Minister of Music is expected to maintain the highest professional competencies in performance and leadership. In addition, the Minister of Music is to sustain the highest possible Christian and professional ideals in the program presentation given the resources available, the wide range of religious and liturgical literature and repertoire, and the mission of the church. 2. Building and maintaining a music program that draws upon a number of constituencies that includes a sanctuary choir, and a gospel choir and could include, but is not limited to a children’s choir(s), instrumental ensembles, and groups with specific foci, e.g., a jazz ensemble, madrigal group, etc. In developing the music program, the Minister of Music is expected to actively encourage and engage congregational participation in the church’s musical life by: ~ Recruiting congregational talent for the various choirs and music groups including the summer choir. ~ Developing a music program for youth which may include vocal choirs, chime and/or hand bell choirs, etc. ~ Offering “non-performance” opportunities outside of regular worship services, e.g., hymn sings. ~ Coordinating musical activities with other groups in the church, e.g., dance, recorders, etc. ~ Nurturing fellowship among members of the choirs and instrumental ensembles through social and educational activities. Regarding oversight of services of paid musicians participating in worship: ~ Sanctuary Choir – Recruit, train, and audition and engage section leaders. ~ Instrumentalists – engage instrumentalists as appropriate. 3. Developing and nurturing relationships with other church and music programs in the wider community, and encourage collaborative activities and events for the church and the city. 4. Providing music for weddings, funerals, and other special services. Additional compensation for such services will be in accordance with church guidelines. 5. Administrative Responsibilities a. Preparing and administering the annual music budget. b. Overseeing the use, care and maintenance of the church’s music library and musical instruments which includes one Holtkamp organ, one Steinway piano and one Hammond organ. c. Reviewing requests of those wishing to use the church for performance and practice; and overseeing the use of the organ and other instruments for recital and practice purposes. Actively participating in the recruitment, selection, appointment and supervision of an Assistant Organist/Pianist and/or Music Intern who will assist the Minister of Music as required. e. Making recommendations for publicity in consultation with the appropriate staff. f. Arranging for appropriate substitute music leadership during vacation and other absences. The position also serves on a special project basis as Artistic Director of Arts at The Park (AATP) presenting artistic events of singular quality that inspire, entertain and empower audiences towards growth and change.
