Position: Executive Director Start date: June 1, 2015 Reports to: Board of Directors Location: New Haven, CT Website: musichavenct.org ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW Founded in 2006 upon the idea that musicians can pursue meaningful careers that merge artistry and public service, Music Haven is a non-profit, community-based organization that builds long-term learning relationships between professional musicians and children in New Haven’s most low-income neighborhoods. With an annual budget of $460K, eight staff members and 17 board members, the organization provides tuition-free education and mentoring programs for 80 children and produces approximately 40 performances a year. These performances regularly feature Music Haven’s resident ensemble, the Haven String Quartet, adjunct musicians, and their students in diverse venues throughout the Greater New Haven community. In just nine years, Music Haven has become an acclaimed feature of New Havens cultural landscape and has earned distinction from the Presidents Committee on the Arts and Humanities as one of the top 50 after-school arts programs in the nation. POSITION OVERVIEW Music Haven seeks a highly motivated, articulate and creative Executive Director to lead us through our next phase of growth. The ideal candidate will be a leader with excellent managerial, communication, grant writing and fundraising skills. The Executive Director will be responsible for heading the financial and administrative management of the organization, working closely with staff to carry out the artistic and program objectives, and realizing Music Haven’s mission of building a vibrant urban community through music education and performance that empowers young people, their families, and professional musicians. RESPONSIBILITIES Leadership and Administrative: Lead and support a high-functioning staff to maintain and improve Music Havens already excellent service and reputation. Be responsible for all operations of the organization, including developing policies and program objectives, allocating resources for greater program effectiveness, and fulfilling all contractual obligations. Program and Service Delivery: Oversee design, marketing, promotion, delivery, quality, and evaluation of programs and services. Collaborate with staff in the development of new programs. Planning: Engage board, staff and key stakeholders in strategic planning for future growth. Lead staff in the development and implementation of short- and long-range plans. Human Resources: Create job descriptions, recruit staff, oversee training, and evaluate performance. Provide support for staff in managing volunteers, interns, and fellows. Fiscal Management: Work with key staff and Board members to formulate and recommend the annual budget for Board approval and prudently manage the organizations resources within those budget guidelines. Fundraising and Grants: Oversee all fundraising, planning and implementation strategies, including working with Board and staff to identify resource requirements, working closely with the Development Director to establish strategies to cultivate, solicit, and provide stewardship of funders and appropriate follow-up, and submit grant proposals and grant reports. Board Partner: Serve as the interface between Board and staff and advise the Chairman of the Board, Board Committees, and the Board of Directors regarding the creation of policies, programs, and strategic direction for the organization. Collaborate with the board in recruiting new board members. Community and Public Relations: Serve as spokesperson and public face of Music Haven and as a persuasive champion of arts and social change in the community. Outreach and Collaboration: Be responsible for outreach and collaboration with other community organizations and service providers to develop strategic partnerships and co-ventures. QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS • A strong commitment to the power of music as a vehicle for social change. Background in classical music performance preferred. • Outstanding oral and written communication skills, with the ability to build relationships with a variety of constituents and present a compelling case for supporting Music Haven. • Ability to empathize and connect with families from diverse backgrounds. • Ability to lead, motivate, and support a passionate and dedicated staff in a fast-paced environment; willingness to roll up one’s sleeves. • A Bachelors degree is required; an advanced degree is desirable. • Five or more years of management experience, including at least two years at an executive level. • A successful track record in fundraising. • Grant writing experience. • Knowledge of nonprofit finance and budgeting. • An understanding of organizational dynamics and an ability to plan strategically and think tactically. • Ability to set priorities, delegate responsibilities and oversee multiple projects. • Teaching experience a plus.
