Position: MSW FACULTY FIELD LIAISON DEPARTMENT: School of Social Work, Field Education Office EXEMPT STATUS: IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Director of Field Education POSTING DATE: September 19, 2014 SALARY: TBA. This position is for 10-months, part-time .5 FTE, (20 hours). GENERAL NATURE OF POSITION: The MSW Program Under the general direction of the Director of Field Education, provides field liaison instruction to graduate students participating in the MSW program placed in field agencies; FFL is the “Instructor of Record” for field practicum students, and responsible for ensuring a cohesive and progressive educational experience in the field practicum. FFL’s function in a consultative capacity to agencies, FI’s and students to ensure that all aspects of the field practicum experience meet or exceed CSWE and SSW policies and procedures. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Facilitate communication between the MSW Program and the practicum site. The FFL shares curriculum development and expectations, and receives feedback from the agency regarding the student’s progress. 2. Provides consultation to the FI to enhance their knowledge and skills, and assist the FI. 3. Assesses the educational experience at each practicum site. The FFL advises the MSW Program on the strengths and weaknesses of the practicum site with respect to the quality of the learning experiences, field instruction, and “match” with the MSW Program’s mission & goals. 4. Plans the educational experience of the student, in conjunction with the FI, including the development of the Learning Agreement & IV-E Addendum to the Learning Agreement, and monitoring the field evaluation documents. 5. Evaluates the student’s progress in field practicum, through document review (e.g. FI evaluation of student, process recordings, community project, etc.) and ongoing collaboration with the FI and student. This responsibility may include recommendations to the Field Director and MSW Field Education Committee regarding changes in placement or termination of a student practicum assignment. 6. Participates in the placement planning process for both for 1st and 2nd year practicum for full-time and part-time MSW students. 7. Conducts a minimum of one site visit per year for each student, for the purposes of monitoring the student’s progress in their practicum assignment. 8. Plan, develop and conduct monthly integrative field seminars and/or clinical seminars for 1st year Title IV-E students, including preparation of instructional materials and facilitating group discussions 9. Assures that the practicum assignment provides an appropriate educational experience that meets MSW Program standards, policies, and curriculum, and assists in the resolution of problematic issues in field. 10. FFL will assist in identifying, evaluating and implementing appropriate child welfare field placement sites for MSW Title IV-E students. 11. Participate on the Field Education Committee and other field related tasks as assigned by the Field Director and Title IV-E Project Coordinator (i.e. IV-E Stipend Awards Interviews, IV-E Mock Interviews, Title IV-E Child Welfare Seminars, etc.) INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS: • Works closely with the Title IV-E Project Coordinator regarding Title IV-E students academic and field matters. • Demonstrate a commitment to and knowledge of the transcultural mission of the MSW Program at SJSU • Interacts with Title IV-E Project staff, Social Work Program Faculty, administrative staff of the School of Social Work, Foundation staff, community groups, and students. • Maintains a professional working relationship with faculty, staff and students at the University, and with administrative and training staff of social service agencies in the community. QUALIFICATIONS: 1) Education and Experience Minimum qualifications include MSW Degree in Social work from a CSWE Accredited MSW program and at least three years of recent experience in public child welfare services. Experience supervising students in the field practicum, preferably in a county child welfare agency, is preferred. 2) Knowledge, Skills, Abilities required This position requires knowledge regarding current public child welfare policies and practices in California; and the ability to work with ethnically diverse students, faculty and agency staff in implementing child welfare training and education programs. Requires strong communication skills (written & verbal) as well as interpersonal and collaborative abilities. 3) Physical Requirement • Must be able to operate a PC including mouse, keyboard and email. • Must be able to operate basic office equipment such as telephone, fax machine and copier. • Must have transportation available and be able to travel extensively (daytime only) between social service agencies located in several different counties. 4) Complexity of Duties • Requires the ability to function independently on a professional level. • Exercise independent judgment in evaluating student performance. • Requires excellent problem-solving skills in developing remedial plans for students when necessary and in resolving disputes between student and agencies. • Works without appreciable direction on assigned projects. • Adheres to the standards and Code of Ethics of the social work profession.
