Positive step forward in the Olympic movement. Host City Contracts - TopicsExpress

Positive step forward in the Olympic movement. Host City Contracts Will Include Human Rights Protections. Historically and currently, the IOC and all of its connected entities (host city contractors) are immune to human rights laws, and even tax laws. Not even London could be held accountable to the UK Equality Act of 2010 - which was stunning given the strength of UK human rights laws and the European Convention on Human Rights. “For years repressive governments have brazenly broken the Olympic Charter and the promises they made to host the Olympics, said Minky Worden, director of global initiatives at Human Rights Watch. This reform should give teeth to the lofty Olympic language that sport can be a force for good. This practical move to uphold the Olympic Charters promises of human dignity and non-discrimination was presented in a meeting between IOC President Thomas Bach and Human Rights Watch at the IOC’s Lausanne headquarters, on October 21. It follows a September IOC announcement that future host city contracts will include an anti-discrimination clause—a reform in response to Russia’s passing an anti-LGBT law in the run-up to the Sochi Winter Olympics.
