Possible repercussions of yesterday’s African Union Submit on Terrorism ****************************************************************** I think the ever controversial concept of the term “Terrorism” is a big blessing in a desirable disguise for many of the dictators and their tyrant governments in the entire African continent. In most of the countries in Africa like Ethiopia where legal systems are, by and large, deployed as the major instruments of suppressing dissent and that the popular idiom which goes “someone’s freedom fighter is somebody else’s terrorist” holds true in the real sense of the term, I would argue that what the future holds for democracy and genuine opposition in Africa might turn out to be about more of pessimism than optimism. In my opinion, the African Union Submit on Terrorism, held yesterday in Nairobi, Kenya, would give a better fulcrum for the bloody dictators to prosecute their political opponents in multiple folds than to safeguard the public from imminent terrorist attacks. By the way, Ethiopia hasn’t been indicated among the list of “African states that continue to face the threat of terror” even by the judgments of the dictatorial leaders who participated on this summit (Kenya, Nigeria and Somalia are identified as such). The bad news for us all is that it was unanimously recommended by the participants of the summit that “regulations on Internet use be reviewed by member states to ensure youths are not radicalized through social media platforms”. Do you have the slightest of a doubt that our “developmental state” government (ጸሃዩ መንግስታችን) would hesitate to exploit this idea, much like it did out of its own “terrorism law” to silence us all even in this cyber space? Alas!!
