Post 2/2 today about the K-Pg extinction event. While its largely agreed upon that an impactor was the primary cause of the event, there are a number of co-occurring processes that likely contributed as well. A study out last week describes samples of zircon that were procured from rocks in the Deccan Traps of Mumbai and dates heightened volcanic activity to 250,000 years before the asteroid impact. The pulses continued for 750,000 years. A significant outgassing in this region may have crippled life around the globe, facilitating a quick demise once the boulder of death arrived—the perfect one-two punch.
