Post 2 of email question When you talk about racism, I assume you mean black/white. Let me start with compassion, my wife has 95%, me not so much, I am 95% tough love. I would be embarrassed if someone gave me something that I did not earn on my own. I believe that everyone, in order to have self esteem, must do something productive. I dont think giving the losers a trophy helps anyone, but I think just playing on a team helps us feel needed. I grew up on an island in the Mississippi River, a long time ago. We lived 5 miles from the nearest highway. We had poor black people and poor white people and since farming was labor intensive in those days, there were quite a few of us. We got along. We had an elderly black man that told us stories, we called him Uncle Abe. He told us about “ Jim Crow”. I think greed is good when it motivates us to work harder to get more for their families. I think it is bad when we want to get something for nothing, whether it is a business man or a welfare recipient. We have seen many groups come to this country over the years, they came with nothing, worked hard and lived the American dream. I believe in helping yourself. When you dont work to get and take advantage of an education, whose fault is that? We see moral standards dropping rapidly and babies having babies, whose fault is that? We see welfare programs that make it uneconomical for a dad to stay with his family or a mom can make more money by having more babies. Why couldnt we think out of the box on this? Why couldnt neighborhoods organize and experienced moms have play groups for the young moms and teach them parenting? Why couldnt a business be created to work in an area using welfare recipients at a lower wage and charge lower costs, in the neighborhood, for auto repair, heating and air, home repair, grocery stores, computer lessons, etc. Rather than having food stamps, why couldnt the schools serve meals 3 times a day, 7 days a week and use welfare recipients at a lower wage, why couldnt neighborhood clean up teams be formed and pay welfare recipients a reduced wage to keep the neighborhoods clean, we need to identify gifted children and make certain they get educated, we have an agency “MOST”, that tries to do that. We need to coordinate our after school programs, maybe precinct paying precinct. Crime is a big problem, Amy Weirich seems to have a plan, lets support her. We are spending 5 billion dollars a year on 501(C)3s in Memphis and what do we have to show for it?Why not be creative? I do have compassion, but sitting on the front porch, saying one of these days, I am going to work just doesnt get it. People have been abused since man arrived on the scene. Catholics, Protestants, American Indians, Jews, our early American settlers came because of oppression and the list could go on. I just dont think the government does a very good job helping people. We need to help each other! America is exceptional! I also want to say that all of us will experience at some time or other “Life is not always fair”.All of us will never have the same ability. I gave up my dream of playing for the Grizz a long time ago. I really think it is up to us to help those in need. I care, but I have spent more time than I wanted researching this. I find a lot of people protecting their jobs, or just wanting to tell you how bad it is without doing anything. We have several people in the Aha group that are really working to improve education. Tutoring helps....when done properly I want to say that all of these things concerned me before Obama became President, but he has not improved things. We are all on the dole when it comes to infrastructure and parks, including National Parks. I think that is a responsibility of our government.
