Post #50 The Authority of Church Councils - 4 The article of the real presence of Our Lord in the most Holy Sacrament had been received under the test of many Councils. Luther wished to make another trial, Zwingle another trial on that of Luther, Brentius another on these, Calvin another, as many tests so many opinions. But, I beseech you, if the test as applied by a general Council be not enough to settle the minds of men, how shall the authority of some nobody be able to do it? That is too great an ambition. Commentary: Essential doctrinal questions need to be conclusively settled at some point or else our faith is a jumbled mess of uncertainty. And if a Church Council, in light of scriptures, with theological knowledge, philosophical perception, and the help of the Holy Spirit promised by our Lord cannot give us an answer to doctrinal questions of the faith, then the question can never be conclusively settled, and we must contentedly exist in that jumbled mess of confusion. If so then there is no truth that we can know. And if so the message of Christ was a vain project. But thanks be to God, such is not the case.
